B2B Acquisitions vs B2C Acquisitions

Oracle had been on acquisition spree for the last few years gobbling up companies like PeopleSoft, Siebel and Hyperion. The acquisitions helped the company to increase the customer base. However, with offerings such as Apps Unlimited, Oracle ensured that the existing customers of the various products can continue to stay on them and those product lines continue to evolve and there is an ongoing support for them.

On the contrary, the acquisition of the Facebook application Oregon Trail by the SpeedDate.com website is completely different. The Slimy acquisition article mentions how SpeedDate.com acquired a completely unrelated Facebook Application and converting it into a dating related application! What? Yes, the article mentions about the notifications received by the Oregon Trail users, “Next week, Oregon Trail’s name and functionality will be changed to SpeedDate. Data entered into the original app won’t be used anymore. Soon you’ll be able to try SpeedDate, the fastest way to meet new people, so stay tuned! P.S. If you want to opt out of this app, instructions can be found here.”

Not only did SpeedDate.com not bother to enhance the original application, it even converted the original application. This would be like Oracle telling PeopleSoft customers that their PeopleSoft HCM software will be replaced with Siebel CRM solution. Ofcourse, in B2B world, such foolish decisions will not happen. But for these poor consumers of the Facebook App, they have no choice but to opt out and go else where. Too bad for Facebook users and to Facebook.
